Florida Bay Scallops

This is a rather fun thing to do and it is relatively easy. However it does require Snorkles, Fins a boat and a Florida Fishing License. The concept is to snorkle in shallow grassy water and find the bay scallop. Pick him up and bring him home. The typical Scallop is about the size of the end of your thumb but they are very plentiful and there is a limit of 2.5 Gallons per person or 10 gallons per boat per day. The season runs from July 1st through September 10th. This is an excellent family fun event that every one can enjoy. Boat rentals can be found in many of the marina's (it may be hard to find one spur of the moment). And young and old can enjoy the sport.

  • Florida Fishing License: $17 (3 day non-resident or year resident)

  • Fins mask snorkle ($29.99 local Walmart)

  • Boat ($$$$ or rentals for about $175/day, or find a friend that lives in Florida)

  • Within Season only (July 1st - Sept 10th) and in designated areas; for more regulation info go here.
